Preparing for emergencies
Welcome to the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Local Resilience Forum (LLR LRF) website.
Winter weather conditions
Currently the LLR LRF is dealing with the effects of the Winter Weather conditions on our communities. Please see the attached guidance what you can do for yourself.
All agencies in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are working together during the cold weather to keep people safe and the local area moving.
Disruption is being kept to a minimum but people are urged to remember the important messages below.
- Drivers should familiarise themselves with gritted routes and stick to the main roads. Please see www.leics.gov.uk/winterdriving for more information.
- Adapt your driving style to the conditions and remember:
- conditions can change very quickly. If they are hazardous, consider whether your journey is really necessary
- to plan your journey
- to allow extra time
- to avoid braking sharply
- to be aware of vehicles around you
For more, please see www.leics.police.uk and click box ‘winter driving advice’.
- Look out for vulnerable neighbours, family members or friends who may need help with shopping and other daily living tasks. Please see www.leics.gov.uk/sc_inclement for more on social care services during severe weather.
- Only visit the Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary if you have a genuine health emergency. Think about if there is an alternative place you can go to such as an NHS walk-in centre and remember to wear suitable footwear if venturing out. For more, please see http://keepwarmkeepwell.direct.gov.uk/index.html .
- Frozen water is not safe and children and adults should keep off it at all times. Owners should either avoid walking their pets near frozen water or make sure dogs are kept on leads.
Severn Trent customers are being urged to report any leaks as the big freeze turns into a rapid thaw. Locally and nationally, there is a massive increase in burst pipes as previously frozen water expands - anyone who spots a leak should call the Leakline number on 0800 783 4444 or report it on-line via the Severn Trent website - www.stwater.co.uk .
