Flood Protection for Leicestershire Residents
Leicestershire County Council has started a new flood defence initiative open to residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Residents are being offered the opportunity to purchase the Doorpacs kits at a subsidised and discounted rate of £30 per pack.
Leicestershire County Council has purchased a number of FloodSax® ‘Doorpacs’ sandbag kits which are designed to be a cheap and effective way to protect properties from floodwater entering through doorways. These use modern ‘sandless’ sandbag technology. Each kit contains four standard Floodsax and one elongated door base Floodsax. Each kit will protect one doorway.
The initiative is being targeted toward those whose property may be at risk of flooding. You can find out if your home is at risk of flooding by visiting the Environment Agency website http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/

Flood protection products
Don’t wait until the flood-water arrives before you take action. Think in advance of how a flood could affect your home or business and take action now to reduce your risk.
If your home is subjected to regular flooding you may benefit more from longer-term flood protection products. The National Flood Forum is a national charity which provides support and advice to communities and individuals that have been flooded or are at risk of flooding. Their website National Flood Forum also lists a number of reputable products and suppliers.
FloodSax absorb water to act just like sandbags, but don't have to be filled with heavy sand and are designed so they mould into doorways to keep floodwater out.
Simply immerse the floodbags in water at the scene for approximately 3 minutes.
When dry the bags take up a tiny amount of storage space and weigh about the same as an empty traditional sandbag. They are UK-manufactured and tested and are ideal for areas vulnerable to flash floods. They are biodegradable so can be safely disposed of in landfill sites.
Have you considered becoming a Flood Warden?
Individuals and communities have important responsibilities for looking after themselves, their families and their own properties. During flood incidents, Community Flood Wardens can be effective in helping to support their local community and adding value to the supporting role of the emergency services.
