Winter - Key Messages
Agencies in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are working together to ensure suitable preparations are being made in order to keep people safe and ensure our communities can go about their daily business if adverse winter weather conditions present themselves.
You can help yourself this winter by taking some simple steps.
Drivers should familiarise themselves with gritted routes and stick to the main roads.
Please see Leicestershire County Council - Winter Driving for more information.
Adapt your driving style to the conditions and remember:
- conditions can change very quickly. If they are hazardous, consider whether your journey is really necessary
- to plan your journey
- to allow extra time
- to avoid braking sharply
- to be aware of vehicles around you
For more details, please see Leicestershire Police for ‘winter driving advice’.
Frozen water is not safe and children and adults should keep off it at all times. Owners should either avoid walking their pets near frozen water or make sure dogs are kept on leads. For more information, please see Leicestershire Fire
Look out for vulnerable neighbours, family members or friends who may need help with shopping and other daily living tasks.
Please see Leicestershire County Council - Social Care for inclement weather advice for more information on social care services during severe weather.
Please see Leicestershire County and Rutland NHS - Flu for the key flu messages.
If you are in one of the at risk groups you need to contact your GP practice to make an appointment for your flu jab to protect yourself and others.
Only visit the Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary if you have a genuine health emergency. Think about if there is an alternative place you can go to such as an NHS walk-in centre and remember to wear suitable footwear if venturing out. For further advice see NHS - Winter Health.
